Philly Urban Peacebuilding Institute

Three Day Peace Circle Workshop

What is a Peace Circle?

The Peacemaking Circle is a process that brings together individuals who wish to engage in conflict resolution, healing, support, decision making or other activities in which honest communication, relationship development, and community building are core desired outcomes. Derived from Aboriginal and Native traditions, Circles bring people together in a way that is inclusive and creates trust, respect and a sense of belonging. As they experience Circles, participants begin to develop the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual habits of peacemaking.

The “Circle keepers “role is to initiate a space that is respectful and safe to engage participants in sharing their stories which is the beginning of relationship building.

Are you the one friends and family members turning to when there is a problem? Are you willing to speak into the issues of violence and conflict around you? Then this valuable training opportunity is for you.

Northeast Tree Tenders - Fall 2009 Tree Planting

Our Fall 2009 planting will be on Saturday November 21st, 2009. We will be planting 50 street trees all over Northeast Philadelphia! The trees are Bare Root Trees, meaning they have no soil around their roots and only weigh 20-30lbs, making them very easy to plant. We will have all the tools and materials but we are looking for volunteers to help us plant! Please come out and help beautify the neighborhoods where we live, and have lots of fun in the process!

Meet at 9am at the Al Furqan Mosque at 7252 Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia right next to the Dollar Tree Store at the intersection of Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard.  (Please let us know if you need directions)

We will be planting rain or shine! Wear clothes that can get dirty and sturdy shoes.

Planting Day Schedule -

9am to 9:30 - Registration and Breakfast

9:45 to 12:00 - We will divide into planting groups that will be headed by experienced planters and head out to plant trees in different locations around the Northeast.

12:00 to 1pm - Everyone will come back to the mosque for lunch.

Since our planting locations are scattered around the northeast, we will have to send groups out in cars to get to the locations. You need not have a car to participate. If you have a car and are willing to take volunteers to the planting location and back, please let us know. Also, if you have any experience planting and would like to help lead a group, let us know.

If you have any questions, you can reach me at 215-694-9607 or respond to this email. You can also visit us online at NortheastTreeTenders.com

Please let us know if you plan to attend so we know how many volunteers we can expect. Also, please pass this on to anyone that might be interested in planting trees. This is one of the largest volunteer tree planting projects that Northeast Philadelphia has seen, and we will need as many volunteers as possible!

We look forward to seeing you on the 21st!

Thanks,

Hasan Malik
